Music Albums of Tamil Cinema that rocked 2012!
The year 2012 turned out to be an excellent year for Tamil Cinema in terms of music (basically the albums). From professionally experienced Music Directors to newbie debutants, everyone worked hard and gave their best to satisfy their fans. Some indeed managed to woo the music lovers significantly with their unique style while some who experimented with their creations could not do so.
There were totally 25 Music Directors approx who worked in this year alone.
If we have a look at the 1st half (Jan-June) of 2012, it was a dry spell for Kollywood where only a few are worth mentioning in terms of who notched it up to the level as expected. To name a few it’s Harris Jayaraj’s Nanban, Kolaveri fame debutant Anirudh’s 3, Vijay Ebenezer’s Kalakalappu and D.Imman’s’ Manam Kothi Paravai.
The other half (July-December) of 2012 saw a series of music albums that kept coming to the stores regularly with some big names and hyped ones. It all started off with MM Keervani’s Naan Ee followed by Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Billa 2, Vijay Antony’s Naan, G.V.Prakash’s Thaandavam, Harris Jayaraj’s Maattrraan and so on.
So who made it big with their creativity and who fell short?
*Harris Jayaraj who usually works one film per year came out with 4 albums this year where Nanban and Maattrran became instant hit albums of the year. Venam Machan(OKOK) and Google Google(Thuappkki) were the picks of the respective movies.
*Yuvan Shankar Raja has had three releases in 2012 where Papapapa (Vettai) and Amabalaikkum Pombalaikkum(Kazhugu) became the two most popular songs. His Billa 2 was a wholesome treat to many.
*G.V. Prakash also had three releases but it turned out to be average with the songs of Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal got good response. Saguni and Thaandavam were just average.
*D.Imman had three releases namely Manam Kothi Paravai,Sattai and Kumki and it was pure surprise packages since the albums had soulful songs and became chartbusters of the year
Having said all this, let’s see who came up with more surprise..
-Anirudh who shot to fame with his Kolaveri song that went viral on youtube had made each song mesmerising that he composed for 3.
-Thaman who is busy with Telugu and Tamil made his presence felt with Parvathy song (Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi).
-Isaignani Ilayaraja’s Neethane En Ponvasantham was a musical treat not only for his fans but also to every music lover.
-Vijay Antony who debuted as an actor/producer with Naan was not far behind, his Makhayala song has been listed as the most played song in parties and clubs.
– MM.Keervani and Vijay Ebenezer gave some fresh albums through their NaanEe and Kalakaalppu.
– Dharan who was lying low for sometime made a tremendous come back with his refreshing album Podaa Podi.
-Young talent K made his mark with the Vaayamoodi song for Mugamoodi.
-N.R.Raghunanthan gave 2 noteworthy hits – Kondadu Manasu (Sunadarapandian) and Para Para (Neerparavai).
Other new talents were Ved Shankar (Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom), Santhosh Narayan (Attakathi,Pizza) and Satish Chakravarthy (Leelai) who managed to entertain us with their melodies which was unusual!
A.R.Rahman and Devi Sree Prasad were missing this year but to compensate that ARR will be coming up with 4-5 films next year and DSP with 3 albums next year.
As 2012 is coming to an end, a number of music albums were released in the last 3-4 weeks which made this December a musical month. But the films are waiting for a grand release next year. So let’s hope to see more young talents and creative juice flowing in the next year. Let’s expect better experiences and best performance out of everyone in the next year. My wishes to all Music Composers, let’s welcome them generously! 🙂
Please note: The content is based on- 1) Songs and not on the BGM/RR of the movie. 2) Albums of films that were released in 2012 only were considered.
